The Seven Grandfather Teachings
The Seven Grandfather Teachings are foundational to Anishinaabe ethics and spirituality. Each teaching was given by one of the seven grandfathers to a young boy who was chosen to receive the wisdom on behalf of all people.
The seven values are: Zaagi'idiwin (Love), Mnaadendimowin (Respect), Aakode'ewin (Bravery), Debwewin (Truth), Gwayakwaadiziwin (Honesty), Dbaadendiziwin (Humility), and Nibwaakaawin (Wisdom).
These teachings are not merely abstract principles — they are a practical guide for living in balance with all of creation. Each value is connected to an animal that embodies its spirit, reminding us that wisdom can be found throughout the natural world.
